As temperatures start to drop and a t-shirt and shorts will no longer suffice, I thought it might be worth offering a few suggestions on your winter clothing options.
The best advice I can give is to wear several thin layers rather than one thick layer, because if you get too hot, at least you can take one of the thin layers off. Make sure they are technical garments, as cotton will soak up the sweat and will make you feel the cold that bit quicker! You lose approximately 40% of your body heat through your head and hands so a running hat or beanie and a pair of running gloves will work well.
No progress on my running injury at the moment, very frustrating but have to accept that it happens to all runners. I'm doing as many stretches and as much self-massage as I can to try and encourage the healing. Will keep you updated
Well it is just over 24 weeks to the Virgin London Marathon and if you are new to the "challenge" then you are not alone! Many of you may be first time runners to the event or even experienced runners who finally gave in to the temptation!
As an experienced level three endurance coach and three time London marathon runner i can understand the challenge you have set yourself and with this in mind i thought i could offer some advice on training, schedules or a shoulder to cry on!
At the moment if you are new to running i expect you are at the walk jog stage (we have all been there) so with this in mind make sure you are well hydrated to start with and are wearing some good appropriate foot wear and clothing, strangely enough this will help with your running as its less for you to have to worry about.
Tip of the week; make finishing your goal not a time if you are a first time marathoner.
Good running!
Lofty.
Seeing as I'm struggling with injury at the moment (happens to the best of us!), thought it might be worth extolling the benefits of gait analysis, and also to mention some of the local physios/sports therapists we have strong links with.
Gloucester Sports has had video gait analysis in-store for almost 2 years now, helping us to more accurately assess the needs and requirements of our customers. It is not foolproof and is not for everybody, but it certainly gives us a good idea of what each individual does as their feet roll through the footstrike. Wearing the wrong shoes can cause injury, so that's where we come in.
We have developed some good relationships with some local physios and sports therapists, pop into the shop for more details.
As I sit here at 5.20pm, it's noticeable how dark it is outside already! This is the time to be putting in the miles for the long winter ahead. Still struggling with a knee problem, really itching to get out and run.
Now is the time to be thinking about high visibility kit, you have to make sure you are seen. Fluo kit might not look particularly fashionable but it is vital for making sure motorists can see you, whether its neon armbands, flashing lights/bands, fluo long-sleeve tops or the staple mesh bib. Saucony have brought out the Vizi-Pro range which is a lovely bright orange, looks very smart and isn't too expensive either.
Sadly Gloucester didn't have a great time of it at their first Birmingham League cross-country figure, finishing last because of several missing athletes. We are by no means out of it and a strong second fixture in December will have us right back in the mix. Happy running
