Ticking over

2011/06/23 at 13:56PM by Steve

After racing at the weekend, this week is simply a case of ticking over before I run a leg of the Cotswold Way Relay on Saturday, 11.7 miles with two massive hills! Had a day off on Monday as I simply ran out of time to run, so made up for it on Tuesday by doing a steady 35 minutes in the morning and then a speedwork session on the roads in the evening.

Started with a mile warm-up, then did 7 sets of (2 minutes hard running (approx 5km pace) followed by 1 minute easy). The first couple of efforts were good but I always find that the recovery bit gets slower and slower as the session goes on! Was covering good ground on the efforts, and finished with a mile warm-down.

Adidas Tempo 4's for the road sessions, still my current favourite shoe!

Midlands Champion!

2011/06/21 at 10:32AM by Steve

Ran at the Midlands Track and Field Champs on Sunday and managed to win the 3km steeplechase title!! Very pleased with that after 10 weeks training. Getting fitter every week and felt good throughout the race, and then legged it with 300m to go.

I've got the Cotswold Way Relay this Saturday, for some reason I've volunteered to do the hardest leg, number 2, which has two massive hills in it. Don't think my endurance is quite there yet so I might struggle over the final few miles, but it should be a nice scenic run!

The perfect run

2011/06/03 at 10:29AM by Steve

Went out for a steady run last night in the Forest of Dean, and had one of those runs where I just felt fantastic! Only ran for 35 minutes as I'm racing on Saturday, but it was one of those rare runs which happens once every few months where it feels effortless. I was ticking along at 6 minute miling up and down a few reasonable hills and just felt as if I was floating! Roll on Saturday......

Ran at the UK Inter-Counties 3km steeplechase in Bedford last Sunday, my first big race since the knee injury. I knew I wasn't as fit as I would like to be (who is?!) but was pleased to sneak a bronze medal. Tried to stick with the leaders but struggled over the final two laps through lack of fitness and lost out on silver on the final lap. Still pleased to come away with a medal off only 7 weeks training.

Struggling!

2011/05/20 at 15:49PM by Steve

Had my second race on Wednesday night, all a bit of a rush job to get there in time for the race. Ran ok timewise but got comfortably beaten by two strong athletes so was disappointed. 6.10 for the 2km chase, not what I wanted with the UK Inter-Counties in 10 days time.

Tried a track session last night as I haven't done much training this week, 3 sets of 800m strong, 200m jog, 200m hard then 200m walk recovery between sets. Clocked 2.16m and 31.1 seconds, then 2.16m and 30.6s. Really struggled on the next 800m, ending up with 2.21 after a shocking second lap. Decided to call it quits there as I felt terrible and didn't think carrying on would be beneficial.

Woke up this morning with a sore throat and have been struggling all day with lethargy, so will take a couple of days off running and go again next week.

Kenyan Hills

2011/05/13 at 10:57AM by Steve

Great training session with the Gloucester AC boys last night, 25 minutes of Kenyan hills on Robinswood Hill. We used the field with three different hills of varying length and ascent, and ran up and down them for 25 minutes solid! Working really hard up the hills and recovering on the way down, a set of three hills was taking me about 5:20 mins so almost got 5 sets in.

Running in the Adidas Adizero Tempo 4 last night, fantastic shoe for picking up the pace and getting on your toes, they might almost be superceding the Nike Zoom Elite as my favourite shoe of all time! Praise indeed....
