The Best Cities to Spend a Weekend In

The best cities to spend a weekend in aren't so big and busy that the visitor just can't get a sense of them over even a long weekend, but they have to have something that holds the interest for two days. A surprising number of cities seem to shut down over what's considered their weekends. But these cities don't.

Baltimore, Maryland, United States

This good, medium sized city has many fascinating things to see and do over a weekend. A visitor can stop by the Inner Harbor and shop or visit the National Aquarium, as colourful outside as its fish are inside. They can take in a play at one of the many theatres, or, if they're in town, catch a concert by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. If the baseball season is on, they can attend an Orioles game at Camden Yards. They can take a stroll through Druid Hill Park or visit its zoo just about year round.

Savannah, Georgia, United States

Savannah is such a beautiful old city that it's worth taking a weekend to visit. The best time to go is in spring and fall, for it is simply too hot in the summer to stroll down its streets, even though it's been voted one of the most walkable cities in the United States. More, in the spring the azaleas are blossoming. Savannah's historic district has about 1,000 beautifully restored antebellum homes that welcome tourists. The best thing is to stay in one of the city's lovely and generous bed and breakfast inns.

Washington D.C.

Whatever else a visitor might think of when they think of Washington, it's the perfect city for a weekend jaunt. The museums are free and the subway is efficient and it's an eminently walkable city. Bus tours take tourists to the Mall and its memorials and across the river for a glimpse of Arlington Cemetery, the former front yard of the defeated Confederate General Robert E. Lee. There are also tours of the White House and the Capitol Building. Before you visit, it may be worth visiting amex online to see if you can make use of travel benefits in Washington.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Though some tourists may think that all things Scottish must be rather dour and damp, Edinburgh is a truly beautiful city and a great place to spend a weekend if the visitor is in the United Kingdom. They should take in Edinburgh Castle on its protected hill way above the city and if it's the season attend a few shows or exhibits at the Edinburgh Festivals that take place in August.

Dublin, Ireland

Leopold Bloom did Dublin in a day, so the visitor can do it on a weekend. Among the must see sights Trinity College, St. Stephen's Green, the National Gallery and St. Patrick's Cathedral. All are within walking distance of each other. The visitor can also take in a plays and concerts around the city and shop or see a movie at the famous O'Connell Street.

These are just a very few of the cities that a visitor can get the flavour of over the course of only two days. The good memories will last a lifetime.
